Digital Workflow Redux – 7 Other Tools We Use Everyday

It’s been one of those days that emphasized just how much of our lives are tied up in our laptops. Our recent post on how we work together digitally only scratched the surface when it comes to the tools and applications we use everyday. Here are eight other enormously useful digital tools we can’t live without:

1. SKYPE – even though we have a dedicated VOIP system we stillm use Skype for videoconferencing and large file transmission. Now that they’ve released an iPhone application for Skype we will probably end up using it even more.

2. TWEETDECK – we love Twitter but all those posts can get a little overwhelming at times. Tweetdeck allows us to create groups, easily send direct messages to other Tweeters, automatically shorten URLs and a whole lot more. Read more

 

Cognitive Surplus-Using Digital Tools to Tap Hidden Resources

What is the largest untapped resource in your organization?

In a recent article in McKinsey Quarterly entitled “Six ways to make Web 2.0 work“, Clay Shirky, an adjunct professor at New York University identified “the underused human potential at companies” as “an immense ‘cognitive surplus’ and one that could be tapped by participatory tools.” Shirky’s point was brought home to me by a recent experience within our company.

The NEW YORK TIMES just doesn’t get it. At least, that’s the impression I get after looking at their home page (part of an Innovation Lab  project we’re working on to rethink what a digital newspaper and/or magazine product could look like).

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of the Times and a number of its writers.
